Fish and Father’s Day

The older I get the more fish mean to me as I have seen the Lord take the fish and loaves and turn them into all He has promised for our lives in Him.

As I write this, a heron stands on the seawall, waiting to fish. As I sit on the dock where I sat with my 44 year old dad at 10 years old dreaming about what our lake lives would be like, all the fish, all the boat rides, all the back flips and tube flips and remodeling plans for this little old cabin where he saw so much potential only to lose him not even a year later. As I docked the boat, playing his favorite songs and thinking about all he would be saying and joking about. As I think about the golf tournament he would have loved and all the days I spent with him pretending to watch golf when he had it on tv.

Mostly, I think about the dad I imagine he would have been these last 21 years, because mostly what I remember is what I’ve seen in pictures or made up in my head because I don’t really remember what it feels like to have a dad. But most of all, I think of every girl after me who feels this same ache today that I do. The girls whose dads were gone before they could remember, the girls whose dads were gone before they could say goodbye, the girls whose dads knew their time was coming but she never thought it would, the girls who just lost their dad and the ones who have grown up without him.

I think about the 36 Girl Talk girls and the 37th who just lost her dad yesterday. We were created with eternity in our hearts. Psalm 92 says, “The righteous will flourish like a palm tree… They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green,” Death was not God’s plan, but sin entered the world, BUT one day death will be no more. In this world of unending heartbreak, I am thankful for our Dad who is father to the fatherless and who never leaves us and is always faithful. Who takes our fish and loaves and fulfills His purpose for our lives, defeating the enemy and upholding the promise of Jeremiah 29:11-13. If you’ve got a good daddy and he’s still here, hug him today and tell him how much you love him.

Thank You, Daddy, for taking our fish and loaves 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Amy Cate

Originally from Pike Road, Alabama, Amy Cate grew up with bare feet and a bow in her hair. She spent most of her childhood playing outside with her neighbors, making forts, shooting basketball, swinging her bat or driving her golf cart as the neighborhood shuttle. At nine years old, she met Jesus in the woods at summer camp and she is convinced everything good happens outside. In September 2004, life as she knew it changed with one diagnosis and six months later, her dad and Prince Charming met Jesus face to face. Middle school started a few months later and she spent the next several years wondering where she would belong in a world not made for her. Girl Talk is the discovery of belonging in Christ and the dream and calling to bring girls and moms into that same belonging in having Jesus as their best friend.
