Breaking The Walls

Walls.

We all know them.

We all have them.

As far back as I can remember I have put up walls. Walls to protect myself and my heart. Walls are built by lies and unbelief. Walls go up when we feel like we’re not good enough, we’re not worthy. Walls are built by fear. Fear of being hurt again or being disappointed again. Fear that this person might leave just like the last one. Fear that someone might see the real us and not like it so much.

We have the real us. The one we are in the car when our favorite song comes on. The one we are really late at night when we’re too tired to keep our walls up and they fall in with exhaustion. We all have our place where the real us comes. Maybe it is with a certain person or in a certain place where we feel safest.

How we really feel.

What we really think.

Who we really are.

Then we have the us where walls barricade our vulnerabilities. We’re not necessarily who the world wants us to be but we’re not our real self. We protect, we hold back, we nod our heads, we soft smile, we mumble the words to our favorite song instead of belting them out.

Walls. Whatever divides us, whatever keeps us back, whatever weighs us down, defeats us, pressures us, whatever hides the real us, whatever keeps us in.

I stood in a room with believers standing up, calling out their insecurities, anger, alcoholism, doubt and pain and claiming them to Christ. They would not defeat them any longer. Walls breaking.

This world has given us walls to protect ourselves, but Jesus gives us His Victory and He is protecting us.

“The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say concerning the Lord, who is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God in whom I trust: He Himself will rescue you from the bird trap, from the destructive plague. He will cover you with His Feathers; you will take refuge under His Wings. His Faithfulness will be a protective shield.” Psalm 91:1-4

“When the weight of all my dreams is resting heavy on my head And the thoughtful words of help and hope have all been nicely said But I’m still hurting, wondering if I’ll ever be the one I think I am. Then you gently remind me that You’ve made me from the first And the more I try to be the best the more I get the worst. And I realize the good in me is only there because of who You are. And all I ever have to be is what You’ve made me Any more or less would be a step out of Your plan As you daily recreate me help me always keep in mind That I only have to do what I can find And all I ever have to be is what You’re made me to be.” – Amy Grant, All I Ever Have To Be

What walls are keeping you in?

Is it fear? Unbelief? Unworthiness? Brokenness? Addiction? Doubt? Low self-esteem? Self protection?

Whatever it is.

Allow the Holy Spirit to break them. Believe that He is protecting you. Our walls are only hurting us, not protecting us. They might be keeping others out, but they’re also keeping us in. God made you to be all that He made you to be. Without walls, without barricades, without barriers. Trust Him. Trust who He made you to be. You are beautiful. You are worthy. You are good enough. You are His.

Not because of who you are, but because of Who He is.
